Academic Structure
At HMA, we understand the importance of a rich, well-balanced, and holistic curriculum. This is achieved by imparting both information and skills in a variety of ways that develop each child intellectually, spiritually, and physically. If a curriculum is fed only by information, then our learners will not be well-rounded individuals with insight into good human character.
As educators, we take on the responsibility to supplement the information-rich curriculum with values, ethics, and morals. We aim to nurture our children so that they may grow into well-adjusted adults with exemplary character, self-assuredness, confidence, and a strong self-identity. We strive to develop children who will become adults who inspire, invent, innovate, change and mold society. If we are persistent in surpassing our physical, intellectual, and spiritual condition, we will be admirable role models for the impressionable young minds who look to our every move for guidance and understanding.
The Revealed Sciences
Beginning the day with As Salaam, Surah Fatiha – asking Allah’s help and guidance on the straight path followed by a supplication of Rabbi Zidni ‘Ilma – asking Allah for increase in knowledge and understanding, continuing the day with profound, insightful & reflective lessons of Quraan and Sunnah, ending the day hymning the dua of bidding farewell and As Salaam.
HMA is an institution which prides itself with a very high standard and benchmark of Islamic teaching and nurturing. Teaching by example is a hallmark which educators exhibit at all times. Learners are thus taught to be leaders and not followers and indeed, stand out as exemplary role-models. The rich teachings of Islam are imbedded in learners with a high level of love and respect.
The love of Allah and the love of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are rooted foremost within our learners. As we strongly believe that, once this love is foremost and firmly entrenched in the heart, then the love of Islam will permeate and saturate their lives with a very colourful charisma and make it most meaningful and fulfilling. We can thus develop and advance into becoming exemplary fellow citizens and add to being part of a fabric of a sound and empathetic society. Development & enhancement of Islamic ethos, character refinement, sound human morals ethics form a great part of our focus. Learners are taught to cherish human values more than material wealth as well as to honour parents, elders, fellow citizens, and how to be an asset to society at large.
The Prepreparatory
Experiential learning & a curiosity-based approach to development underpins the HMA Pre-Preparatory approach to young learner development. From sensorial learning to practical activities – we constantly research and apply best practice learning methodologies in and outside of our classrooms.
Our bespoke learning environment inspires the hearts and minds of our young learners and provides us with flexible spaces which makes learning an everyday adventure.
Curriculum
Themes; letters and numbers and basic Islamic content form the foundation of our curriculum and learners develop these foundational skills using our 21st century multi-disciplinary and play-based approach to learning. Our fantastic team of qualified educators and amazing assistants ensures that your child is not just a number – but a special individual who is celebrated and welcomed each and every day at the Houghton Muslim Academy.
The Foundation Phase
When we speak about the Foundation Phase, we do not only speak about the groundwork in Languages, Mathematics and Life Skills. We also speak about the establishment of good character and habits that will shape our learners and lay the foundation for adulthood.
At HMA, we pride ourselves on having a learner-centred Foundation Phase, where we recognize various needs and talents of individual learners. We commit to providing support and encouragement to every learner through their schooling journey with a compassionate and caring attitude. We are studious in guiding learners through their holistic development and empowering our future leaders. We reinforce honesty and integrity at every step of the way. And we are enthusiastic promoters of having a healthy interest in sport and physical education.

The Intersen Phase
At Houghton Muslim Academy (HMA), we pride ourselves on offering an educational journey that aligns with the South African CAPS curriculum. While we utilize the IEB standards for assessment, our primary focus is on providing a robust foundation based on the CAPS curriculum.
In this phase, HMA offers a dynamic educational approach that integrates STEM-based education with innovative technology and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Our curriculum is carefully crafted to empower learners to excel in the ever-evolving world by fostering collaborative problem-solving skills through hands-on experiences.
At HMA, we believe in preparing our learners to collaborate effectively with technology rather than just compete against it. This approach involves a synergy between STEM education and utilizing the IEB standards as a measuring tool for our academic endeavors.
This involves teaching real life skills like problem solving, succinct argumentation, analytical thinking, the application of knowledge, and understanding of the curriculum.
For decades the industry imagined that teaching as delivery, in the form of instruction, would mean that human teachers could eventually be replaced by computers. But this has misunderstood the nature of teaching and learning, which is a uniquely personal and social activity between people, that caters to every learner changing needs, unique talents, passions, and interests, which HMA teachers try to provide and that is why we are a State of the Heart School.
